Utah Museum of Contemporary Art
Downtown Salt Lake City's contemporary art museum — six galleries, pay-what-you-can admission, and a 90-year lineage from the Art Barn through the Salt Lake Art Center to UMOCA.
Also known as: UMOCA, Salt Lake Art Center (former name, 1959–2010), Art Barn (former name, 1931–1958)
The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA) sits one block off Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City, in a two-story building organized around six distinct gallery spaces presenting work by local, national, and international contemporary artists. The institution traces its lineage back to 1931 as the Art Barn — founded by art patron Alta Rawlins Jensen — through its decades as the Salt Lake Art Center and finally rebranded UMOCA in 2011. The Main Gallery and Street Gallery hold the two largest exhibitions; the Codec, Projects, and Ed. Space galleries rotate smaller solo and project shows on shorter cycles, including the biennial Catherine Doctorow Prize for Contemporary Painting. The museum runs on a pay-what-you-can model with a suggested $10 donation. UMOCA is a four-time Warhol Foundation grantee and a 2015 NEA Art Works recipient.
