Overview

Antelope Island is a fault-block mountain range that happens to be surrounded by the Great Salt Lake. It is 28,800 acres of grassland and rock with a free-ranging bison herd on it, a causeway out from Syracuse, and — on a summer evening — clouds of brine flies that are, genuinely, part of the experience. It is also the most honest dark-sky park in this project. Its certification application does not claim greatness. It says the park 'does not possess superior or exemplary nighttime landscapes associated with Gold or Silver designations' and that it 'falls somewhere in between Silver and Bronze requirements.' The Ogden Astronomical Society put it at Bortle 4 and the meter averages 20.67. What makes it dark at all is pure geometry: you stand on the WEST side of the island, and the island's own ridge stands between you and the lights of the Wasatch Front. It is a dark sky by shadow, and it is forty minutes from two million people, which is the entire argument for its existence.

This is a Utah state park — the federal America the Beautiful pass is NOT accepted. The entrance gate closes at 10pm (March-November) or 7pm (November-February), but there is no closing time for visitors already inside, and the exit gate opens automatically. That policy is why night-sky viewing works here at all.

Hiking

Frary Peak up the spine of the island, and easy shoreline walks at White Rock Bay and Ladyfinger. Bison have right of way and are not tame.

Season: Spring and autumn. Summer brings heat and brine flies in clouds.

Give the bison a very wide berth. People are injured by them most years.

Stargazing

Certified 2017. Bortle 4, SQM-L average 20.67 — and the park is candid that it sits 'somewhere in between Silver and Bronze requirements.' Go to the WEST side: the island's own ridge blocks the Wasatch Front. Regular star parties with the Ogden Astronomical Society.

Season: Year-round. Avoid winter inversion nights, which cost the sky nearly three tenths of a magnitude.

The gate closes at 10pm (7pm in winter), but you may stay as long as you like once inside — the exit gate opens automatically.

Wildlife & Paleontology

A free-ranging bison herd of several hundred, plus pronghorn, bighorn and one of the most important migratory bird stops in the hemisphere.

Season: The autumn bison round-up is the event of the year.

Night Sky

Bortle 4, and the park says so without flinching. The single biggest variable here is not the moon — it is the Wasatch Front inversion. Compare the park's own three survey nights: a clear new-moon night in April averaged about 20.85, and a new-moon night in December, under what the log calls a 'moderate inversion/haze', averaged about 20.57. That is nearly three tenths of a magnitude lost to a temperature inversion trapping the valley's light under a lid — a distinctively Salt Lake problem, and one no plateau park in this corpus has. The other variable is simply which side of the island you are on.

About these numbers

The most honest application in this project. Antelope Island does not claim to be dark. It states outright that the park 'does not possess superior or exemplary nighttime landscapes associated with Gold or Silver designations' and that, from the west side, it 'falls somewhere in between Silver and Bronze requirements.' Its case is different, and better: it is a genuinely usable night sky within forty minutes of two million people. And the reason it works at all is geometry, not remoteness — the application is explicit that it is 'the west side of the island, DUE TO THE LARGE MOUNTAIN RIDGE BLOCKING THE VIEW TO THE EAST' that is the dark-sky resource. The island's own mountain stands between the west shore and the entire Wasatch Front. That is the fifth time in this corpus that a wall, a rim or a ridge has done more for a night sky than distance ever did.

Bortle Class 4: The Contested Sky

Under a Class 4 sky, the Milky Way remains visible overhead, but obvious light domes occupy parts of the horizon. Wilderness and development are both present, and the emotional experience changes depending on which direction a person faces.

On the far west shore on a clear, inversion-free new-moon night, with the island ridge standing between you and every light in the Salt Lake valley — the park's best readings, near 20.88, came on exactly such a night in April.

During a winter inversion, when the valley's light is trapped under a lid of cold air and haze — the park's own December readings fell nearly three tenths of a magnitude on precisely such a night.

Some of the oldest rock in Utah — Precambrian metamorphics roughly 1.7 billion years old, sitting in the middle of a lake that is geologically an eyeblink. The island is a horst: a block pushed up between faults.

The Great Salt Lake is one of the most important migratory bird stops in the hemisphere, and the brine flies most visitors complain about are what feeds them.

History

Antelope Island lies within the ancestral homeland of the Shoshone, Ute and Goshute peoples, whose connection to the Great Salt Lake continues today. Mormon settlers ran stock here from the mid-nineteenth century — the Fielding Garr Ranch, still standing, is the oldest continuously inhabited Anglo-built house in Utah. The State bought the island in pieces between 1969 and 1981.
