Clear Creek Camp

A granite gorge camp at mile 84, near the mouth of Clear Creek — one of the Grand Canyon's few perennial tributaries, deep in the Vishnu Schist.

Clear Creek Camp at mile 84 sits on river right in the heart of the Grand Canyon's granite gorge, near the mouth of Clear Creek. This is deep canyon country — the Vishnu Schist and Zoroaster Granite walls rise dark and vertical from the river, and the inner gorge narrows to its most dramatic proportions. The camp occupies a sandy terrace above the river, tucked against the Tapeats Sandstone bench that marks the transition from inner gorge to the broader canyon above. Clear Creek itself is a perennial tributary — one of the few reliable side streams in the canyon — and the nine-mile Clear Creek Trail from Phantom Ranch terminates near here, connecting the river corridor to the North Rim trail system. The creek runs clear over Tapeats ledges and provides good wading and water access. From camp, the view is straight into the Precambrian heart of the canyon: black schist walls streaked with pink granite intrusions, the oldest exposed rock in the Grand Canyon.
