Pictograph Fork Camp

Intimate sandy camp in Labyrinth Canyon with walking access to Barrier Canyon Style pictograph panels.

Also known as: Horseshoe Canyon Camp, Pictograph Camp

Pictograph Fork Camp occupies a sandy bench near the mouth of a side drainage in Labyrinth Canyon, within walking distance of rock art panels that give the camp its name. The Green River moves slowly here — no rapids, no urgency — and the camp reflects that pace. The flat is modest, shaded in the afternoon by the canyon wall to the west, with a direct view across the river to Navajo Sandstone walls streaked with desert varnish. The pictograph panels are Barrier Canyon Style — elongated, haunting anthropomorphic figures painted in dark red pigment on the alcove walls above the drainage. They are among the most significant examples of this rock art tradition in the canyonlands region. The camp itself is quiet, sandy, and intimate — a two- or three-boat camp at most, with the kind of solitude that Labyrinth Canyon is known for.
