Class III–III+ Rapid · Cataract Canyon
Brown Betty
First named rapid for many Potash-origin trips after the long approach.
Also known as: Brown Bettie, Rapid 1
Brown Betty (Rapid 1) is the first named rapid of Cataract Canyon, marking the transition from the flatwater of Meander Canyon through the Confluence into the whitewater corridor. A solid Class III drop at most flows. Below the rapid, on river-right, is a large beach that is one of the canyon's premier layover campsites.
Difficulty
Read-and-run Class III at moderate flows. Sets the tone for the rapid sequence to come.
Scouting
Generally run on sight. Strong groups may scout at very high water.
