Gypsum Canyon
Historically submerged under Lake Powell, re-emerging as reservoir levels drop. Character varies with reservoir state. Returning Rapids Project is the current authoritative source.
Also known as: Gypsum, Gypsum Rapid
Gypsum Canyon Rapid sits at the confluence of Gypsum Canyon with the Colorado, traditionally one of the last consequential rapids of Cataract before the river entered historical Glen Canyon (now Lake Powell). The rapid was submerged when Lake Powell filled in the 1960s and has been re-emerging since the early 2000s as reservoir levels have dropped — the character and class depend on current reservoir elevation.
Difficulty
Class varies with reservoir state — from nonexistent (fully submerged) to reportedly Class III–IV with significant features (fully re-emerged). Check Returning Rapids Project for current state.
