Horn Creek Rapid
Horn Creek Rapid is one of the Inner Gorge's most feared rapids — a short, explosive Class V where the consequences of an error are among the most severe in the canyon. The rapid is compact but extremely powerful, with a large left hole and schist walls that offer no margin for recovery.
Difficulty
Class V. Right entry required to avoid the dominant left hole. The run is short but unforgiving. Many experienced Grand Canyon groups choose to portage this rapid regardless of flow.
The water
Character: explosive ledge drop with dominant hole.
Features: large recirculating left hole; fast right channel with laterals; compressed powerful hydraulic field.
Hazards: left hole is retentive and powerful — must be avoided; compact rapid leaves little recovery room; schist walls offer no escape route.
How it changes with flow
Low water: Left hole features are more defined and identifiable. Right line is narrow.
Medium: Left hole at full power. Right line requires excellent entry alignment.
High water: Left hole significantly more dangerous. Right channel accelerates. Most groups portage at high water.
Scouting
Scout from river right. This is among the rapids many groups portage. If running, right-side alignment is critical.
Swim consequences
Extreme. Inner Gorge walls, immediate downstream consequences, and a potentially retentive left hole make this one of the highest-consequence swims in Grand Canyon.
