Class III–IV Rapid · Split Mountain

Moonshine Rapid

Moonshine Rapid is one of the two primary whitewater challenges in Split Mountain Canyon — a compact but significant Class III–IV drop with a powerful wave train and limited scouting real estate.

Difficulty

Class III at moderate flows with pushy laterals. Can escalate to IV at high flows when the entrance becomes more powerful and recovery zones compress.

The water

Character: pool-drop with wave train.

Features: powerful entrance wave; lateral current; wave train through main channel.

Hazards: strong lateral waves can flip small craft; fast current limits recovery after entrance move.

How it changes with flow

Low water: Defined rock features and readable lines. Technical entrance.

Medium: Classic Split Mountain character — pushy and fast.

High water: Entrance becomes more powerful and laterals increase. Class IV potential.

Scouting

Scout from river left. Most groups scout the entrance and run the wave train.

Swim consequences

Moderate. Relatively short rapid with recovery eddy downstream.
