Sock-It-To-Me

Below Skull, after Bowling Alley. A pool-drop with a powerful entry wave and a midstream hole; at higher flows, magnetic wall is an issue, setup your line from the far right.

Sock-It-To-Me is one of Westwater Canyon's most significant rapids — a classic Colorado River pool-drop where the canyon narrows dramatically through ancient Precambrian basement rock. The current funnels into a powerful entry wave and a midstream hole; the cleanest runs set up as far right as possible so the river carries you into the hole just right of center. At higher flows the Magnetic Wall on river-left, just below the hole, becomes a serious flip hazard — and staying right is what keeps you off it. Like Skull, it is one of the defining challenges that give Westwater Canyon its reputation as a serious technical run in a short canyon.

Difficulty

Class IV at most flows. The entry setup is everything: start as far right as you can so the current takes you into the hole just right of center — you'll still get plenty of the hole, but it sets you up to stay off the river-left Magnetic Wall below. Drift in without setting up and you'll come through the hole on the left of the wave train, which at higher flows just about guarantees contact with the Magnetic Wall.

The water

Character: pool-drop.

Features: powerful entry wave; midstream hydraulic hole — set up right of center; Magnetic Wall — river-left wall just below the hole, a factor at higher flows; narrow canyon walls limiting scout angles; fast exit current.

Hazards: central hole — difficult to flush at high water; the Magnetic Wall on river-left at higher flows drives into craft and will flip a fully loaded raft; a well-timed high-side is the only defense; drifting through the hole onto the left of the wave train sets you up for the Magnetic Wall; narrow channel limits error recovery.

How it changes with flow

Low water: More technical with exposed rocks. The hole is smaller and more avoidable, but precise lines still matter.

Medium: Classic pool-drop character. The hole is well-defined and the right-of-center line is clear from the left-bank scout.

High water: The hole becomes more powerful and harder to avoid, and the Magnetic Wall on river-left just below it comes into play. Set up far right — the current still carries you into the hole, but being right of center gives you the best chance to stay off the wall. At higher flows it drives into craft hard enough to flip a fully loaded raft, and a perfectly timed high-side is your only defense. High-water Westwater is for experienced teams only.

Scouting

Scout from river left above the rapid. The entry angle is the critical decision — read the hole and, at higher flows, the Magnetic Wall on river-left below it, and set your line far enough right to stay off the wall.

Swim consequences

High. The narrow canyon limits self-rescue and throw-bag positioning, and at higher flows the river-left Magnetic Wall adds a flip hazard in confined, powerful water.
