Class III–IV Rapid · Grand Canyon

Unkar Rapid

Unkar Rapid at mile 72.6 is the opening rapid of the Upper Granite Gorge whitewater sequence and the entry point into Grand Canyon's big-water character. Built by debris from Unkar Creek on river-left, the rapid features a long, powerful wave train with a significant right-side hole. Unkar is where Grand Canyon trips transition from Marble Canyon's character to the technical Class IV–V challenges of the Upper Granite Gorge.

Difficulty

Class III at low flows, Class IV at medium and above. Standard line enters left of center and drives right through the wave train.

The water

Character: debris-fan constriction with wave train and holes.

Features: left-side debris fan at Unkar Creek; significant right-side hole at moderate flows; wave train through center-right.

Hazards: right-side hole can flip rafts; wave train builds at high flows; consequences magnified by remote location mid-canyon.

How it changes with flow

Low water: More rock definition; right-side hole reveals rocky structure.

Medium: Classic Unkar — right-side hole is the primary feature to avoid.

High water: Powerful wave train; hole grows and becomes a retentive feature.

Scouting

Routinely scouted from river-left.

Swim consequences

High. Cold water, remote location, current pushes into Upper Granite Gorge rapids downstream. Self-rescue priority.
