Warm Springs Rapid
Warm Springs Rapid is the defining challenge of Yampa Canyon and one of the most flow-sensitive and consequential rapids in the entire Colorado Plateau river system. The rapid was created by a 1965 rockslide from Warm Springs Draw that deposited massive debris across the Yampa's channel, fundamentally altering the river's character at this point. At high flows it is among the most powerful rapids anywhere in the region.
Difficulty
Class IV at low flows, escalating to Class V or V+ at medium and high flows. The left-side feature — formed by the debris fan — can be retentive and dangerous. Right side has a defined run but requires precise entry. Mandatory scouting for all groups.
The water
Character: debris-fan drop with large hydraulics.
Features: massive debris fan from 1965 rockslide; left-side powerful hole; right channel with large laterals; violent tailwave sequence.
Hazards: left hole retentive and dangerous — must be avoided at all flows; debris fan can shift after major flood events; rapid character changes significantly with flow; Yampa's cold water amplifies swim consequences.
How it changes with flow
Low water: Below 1,500 cfs rapid is more technical with defined rock features. Left hole identifiable and avoidable with precise right-side entry.
Medium: 1,500–5,000 cfs: full character of the debris-fan drop. Large features. Right run is powerful but navigable. Left hole at dangerous power.
High water: Above 5,000 cfs: one of the most powerful rapid sequences in the Colorado Plateau. The entire hydraulic field expands dramatically. Some NPS rangers and experienced outfitters recommend portaging above 6,000–7,000 cfs.
Scouting
Mandatory scouting from river right. All private and commercial groups scout this rapid regardless of experience. Portage is possible river right with difficulty. Allow generous time.
Swim consequences
Extreme. Cold snowmelt water, powerful hydraulics, and the remote location inside Dinosaur National Monument make this one of the highest-consequence rapid swims in the region. The 1965 flood that created this rapid killed multiple people.
