Class IV–V Rapid · Lodore Canyon

Hell's Half Mile

Hell's Half Mile is the crux rapid of Lodore Canyon and one of the most significant challenges in the entire Dinosaur National Monument river system. The rapid extends through a long boulder-choked corridor with multiple distinct drops. It is mandatory scouting for virtually all private and commercial groups.

Difficulty

Class IV at moderate flows — technical entry, large boulders, multiple drops with converging currents. At high water it escalates to Class IV+ or V with powerful hydraulics throughout the half-mile run length.

The water

Character: continuous technical boulder garden with distinct drops.

Features: multiple drops over half-mile distance; large boulders requiring precise navigation; converging currents; limited recovery eddies between drops.

Hazards: pin risk on mid-channel boulders; limited bail-out options mid-rapid; cold water consequence.

How it changes with flow

Low water: More rock definition requires careful line reading and precise maneuvering through boulder maze.

Medium: Classic Hell's Half Mile — powerful and technical. Lines are defined. Most groups can find a runnable route with scouting.

High water: Rapid becomes more continuous and powerful. Individual features wash together. Serious hydraulics throughout. Significantly escalated consequence.

Scouting

Scout extensively from river right. Takes time — plan at least an hour for scouting and running for most private groups. Portage is difficult but possible river right.

Swim consequences

Serious. Long rapid with limited recovery zones. Cold water from dam releases increases hypothermia risk. Rescue can be difficult to execute mid-rapid.
