Class III–IV Rapid · Grand Canyon

House Rock Rapid

House Rock Rapid at mile 17 is an early and important psychological marker for Grand Canyon groups — the first significant Class IV of the trip, arriving just as teams are settling into canyon life. The rapid's name comes from the massive Marble Canyon talus boulder visible from camp upstream.

Difficulty

Class III–IV. Right-side entry required to avoid the large left lateral that can flip rafts. A common trip-shakedown rapid.

The water

Character: boulder-influenced drop with laterals.

Features: large right-to-left lateral wave; wave train through center and right; pool below.

Hazards: large left lateral wave can flip or spin craft caught off-line; rocks on right at lower flows.

How it changes with flow

Low water: More rock definition. Right channel becomes tighter.

Medium: Classic House Rock character. Left lateral is the primary challenge.

High water: Left lateral grows significantly. More powerful throughout.

Scouting

Most groups scout their first time. Experienced Grand Canyon groups often run without scouting at moderate flows.

Swim consequences

Moderate. Long pool below with good recovery opportunity.
