Soap Creek Rapid
Soap Creek Rapid at mile 11.2 is the second significant rapid of Marble Canyon — often the first full-on wave-train experience of a Grand Canyon trip. Debris from Soap Creek on river-right narrows the channel and builds a sustained wave train that is straightforward at medium flows but builds teeth at higher water.
Difficulty
Class III at moderate flows; Class IV above ~25,000 cfs. Center-left line threads the main wave train.
The water
Character: wave train rapid.
Features: constriction from right-side debris fan; sustained wave train center; recovery pool below.
Hazards: large waves can swamp or flip at high flows; right-side holes at certain water levels.
How it changes with flow
Low water: Rocky run through center-left; waves modest.
Medium: Classic Soap Creek wave train.
High water: Wave train becomes large and powerful; more consequential.
Scouting
Commonly scouted, especially at higher flows. Scout from river-left.
Swim consequences
Moderate. Long pool below provides recovery.
