Three Fords Rapid
Also known as: Three Fords
Three Fords Rapid is one of the biggest whitewater features of Desolation Canyon — a Class III near the lower end of the canyon that takes its name from three distinct rocky drops historically forded on foot at low water. The rapid marks the approach to the transition zone where Desolation gives way to Gray Canyon downstream.
Difficulty
Class III at most flows. The three drops are separated by short pool-sections, allowing staged descents. Clean lines exist through each drop.
The water
Character: pool-drop.
Features: three distinct drops; boulder garden entry; pool recovery between drops; rocky at low water.
Hazards: rock sieves at low water; pinning hazard on exposed boulders.
Scouting
Most parties run Three Fords without scouting at moderate flows. River-left scout available if needed.
