Class III–IV- Rapid · Desolation Canyon

Joe Hutch Creek Rapid

Also known as: Cow Swim Rapid, Joe Hutch Rapid, Joe Hutch / Cow Swim Rapid, Joe Hutch Canyon Rapid

Joe Hutch / Cow Swim Rapid at mile 54.3 is one of the biggest rapids in Desolation Canyon. A 2008 debris slide from Joe Hutch Canyon on river-right dramatically changed the rapid character — what had been a moderate Class II–III became one of the largest drops on the run. The rapid carries both historical names: Cow Swim from earlier livestock-era usage, and Joe Hutch from the 2008 event and the creek that caused it.

Difficulty

Class III+ at most flows, solid IV- at high water. The debris-slide reshape makes this a mandatory scout for private groups at higher flows.
