Flat Canyon Camp

Flat Canyon Camp — access point for one of the better petroglyph panels in Desolation, at a wide and comfortable sandy bench.

Flat Canyon Camp at mile 31.5 sits near the mouth of Flat Canyon, one of the side drainages carrying Fremont culture rock art in Desolation Canyon. The camp is a solid midpoint stop in the upper third of the float, and the adjacent canyon drainage provides a short but productive petroglyph hike — one of the highest-density rock art sites accessible from a river camp in the canyon. The Green River here is moving steadily through canyon walls that have risen significantly since Sand Wash. Roan Cliff stratigraphy dominates — layers of Eocene-age lacustrine sediment in greens, tans, and whites above the darker canyon bottom. The camp is wide, flat, and sandy.
