Rock Creek Camp
The Rock Creek Ranch camp — the most historically rich stop in Desolation, with standing homestead buildings, Fremont petroglyphs, and a reliable side creek.
Also known as: Rock Creek Ranch Camp
Rock Creek Camp at mile 42 is one of the most significant stops in Desolation Canyon — positioned near Rock Creek Ranch, a historic homestead established in the early 1900s that operated as a working cattle ranch deep in the canyon until the mid-20th century. The ranch buildings are still standing and accessible from the river: a small cabin, outbuildings, and the remnants of a kitchen garden that has naturalized into the riparian corridor. Rock Creek itself is a reliable water source flowing from the Book Cliffs, and the canyon mouth above the ranch contains some of the best Fremont petroglyph panels in the float corridor. This is a natural layover camp — the Rock Creek Ranch walk is short and the ranch itself carries a significant amount of human story in a landscape defined by its absence of people. Most groups on the standard Desolation itinerary spend a layover here.
