Wire Fence Camp

Wire Fence Camp at mile 57.6 is named for the remnants of a cattle fence that historically crossed the canyon drainage here — a mark of ranching operation in an otherwise inaccessible stretch of river. The camp sits on a bench above the river near Wire Fence Canyon, and the Wire Fence Canyon hike is accessible from this camp: a route into the side canyon that gains elevation into the Roan Cliffs above. The canyon drainage carries more complex terrain than many Desolation side hikes. At this point in the float, the canyon is transitioning toward the lower section.
