Coal Creek Camp at mile 68.6 sits in the transition zone between Desolation Canyon and Gray Canyon — the Desolation/Gray Canyon complex is one long continuous float, but the character shifts near this mile as the Roan Cliffs begin to step back and the canyon opens slightly. Coal Creek enters from the canyon wall above, and its name reflects the coal-bearing strata in the Book Cliffs formation above the river corridor. The camp is a good penultimate stop for groups planning a final push to the Nefertiti take-out.
