Big Drop 1
Kolb Rapid.
Also known as: Rapid 21, Kolb Rapid
Big Drop 1 is the first of Cataract Canyon’s three marquee rapids. It marks the transition from consequential warm-up rapids into the main big-water corridor and is commonly scouted by private groups, especially during spring runoff.
Difficulty
Character changes substantially with flow. At moderate flows it is commonly treated as a powerful Class IV move with immediate consequence above the rest of the Big Drops. At flood-stage flows above ~50,000 cfs it becomes part of a continuous Class V consequence zone when considered together with Big Drop 2 and Big Drop 3.
The water
Character: big water.
Features: large lateral waves; stacked wave train; recovery-sensitive tailwaves; powerful center current.
Hazards: loss of boat angle above Big Drop 2; swimmer carry-over into downstream rapids; cold-water exposure during runoff.
How it changes with flow
Low water: More structure and rock definition; lines may look simpler but mistakes can still have serious downstream consequences.
Medium: Classic pushy Cataract feel with strong lateral influence and fast transition into the main rapid sequence.
High water: Becomes larger, faster, and harder to recover from. A mistake here can compound immediately into Big Drop 2 and 3.
Scouting
Often scouted as part of a full Big Drops scouting sequence. Exact scout locations and safe eddy access vary with flow and group craft.
Swim consequences
High. Swimmers can be carried directly into the remainder of the Big Drops sequence with limited recovery opportunity.
Commonly run in: oar raft, paddle raft, cataraft, hard shell kayak.
